XACTIMATE,
DECODED.
Xactimate is the language insurance adjusters speak. You don't have to be fluent — but the more codes you recognize on sight, the faster you can argue your supplement. Here are the codes that come up on roughly every storm claim.
Why Xactimate codes matter to roofers (even if you don't use Xactimate)
Most adjusters scope claims in Xactimate. The line items they approve come from the Xactimate item database. Each item has a code (e.g., RFG 240) and a default unit price for your market.
You don't have to use Xactimate yourself, but knowing the codes lets you read an adjuster's scope, identify what got missed, and write a defensible supplement using the same vocabulary they use.
Tear-off and disposal
RFG 240 (Tear-off comp shingles, 1 layer) is the foundational tear-off line. RFG 240S (steeper than 7/12) and RFG 240C (cut-up roof) carry markups. Always check whether the adjuster used the right modifier — flat 240 on a 9/12 roof is a $400+ underpay on a typical residential claim.
Re-roof labor and material
RFG 240F is felt removal. RFG 1100 series covers shingle install (with sub-codes for laminated, dimensional, etc.). Watch for the "premium architectural" upgrade if the homeowner has a name-brand product — that is often $30+/sq more than the default.
Drip edge, starter, ridge cap
RFG DRIP — drip edge by linear foot. Often missing from initial scopes. Code-required in most jurisdictions on a tear-off; supplement it back.
RFG STARTER — starter strip course. Often missing. IRC code reference: R905.2.4.
RFG RIDGCS — ridge cap shingles by linear foot. If the adjuster scoped 3-tab caps on a dimensional shingle install, that is an upgrade supplement waiting.
Underlayment
RFG IWS — ice and water shield. Most jurisdictions require it in valleys, eaves, and around penetrations. RFG SYN — synthetic underlayment. Check what the manufacturer requires; many shingle warranties demand specific synthetic types and the adjuster may have scoped felt.
Detach & reset (the hidden margin killers)
RFG DRSAT — detach & reset satellite. RFG DRGUT — detach & reset gutters. RFG DRTRM — detach & reset various trim. Most initial scopes miss these. The labor is real; the line items get paid when supplemented.
Permit, debris, dump
RFG PRMT — permit fee. Often missed. Cite local jurisdiction requirement. RFG DEBRIS — debris removal beyond the dumpster. RFG DUMP — dump fee. All routinely missed and routinely supplementable.
Code-driven items (the easiest supplements to win)
IRC code references are the strongest argument. R903 (roof drainage). R905 (roof coverings — including the .2 series for asphalt shingle requirements). R907 (re-roofing). When you cite a specific IRC section, the adjuster is no longer arguing against you — they are arguing against the building code.
How to use codes inside your CRM
Inside Revolve Core, the supplement editor has IRC and Xactimate code references searchable inline. Pick the line item, the code citation auto-fills, and the photo evidence attaches by tag. You write better supplements without becoming a full-time Xactimate user.
