How admins edit built-in roles, build custom ones, and what the permission checklist actually gates in the app.
When the built-in roles do not fit how your company divides work, the Roles & permissions screen lets you reshape them — or build custom roles from scratch. Every role is a named bundle of permissions, presented as a category-grouped checklist.
§Built-in and custom roles
The role list shows built-ins alongside any custom roles your company has created. Built-ins are editable — tighten or loosen them as you like — and each carries a RESET TO DEFAULT so an experiment is never permanent. Custom roles let you name a job title of your own and pick its permissions from the same checklist.
OWNER role's role-management rights are locked and cannot be edited. This is deliberate: it makes it impossible for any permissions change to lock a company out of managing its own roles.§What permissions gate in practice
Permissions show up as differences in what people can see and touch. A few concrete examples from around the app:
- ◆The masthead ⚙ gear and the phone
MOREsheet's Admin Console row are admin-only chrome. - ◆The web
MARKETINGtab is gated to owners, admins, operators, managers, and office staff — field reps never see it. - ◆Stage triggers render read-only for non-admins.
- ◆The team-wide daily-notes view requires the view-all permission.
- ◆The commission queue is staff-only.
