FINANCIAL SETTINGS

§ INVOICING + PAYMENTS3 min READUPDATED 2026-08

The company financial policy screen — alerts, approval thresholds, commission basis, overhead, and tax, each on its own card.

Document rules decide what an invoice looks like; financial settings decide how your company treats the money behind it — when to raise an alarm, what needs sign-off, how commission math starts, and what overhead every job carries. The editor puts each concern on its own card, so you can tune one policy without touching the rest.

§One card per concern

CardWhat it controls
AlertsWhen financial warnings fire — the thresholds behind the NEEDS ATTENTION banner on a customer’s FINANCIALS tab and the financial-alert reports.
Approval thresholdsThe dollar limit above which estimates need approval, and whether refunds and change orders require sign-off.
Commission basisWhich number commission calculations start from.
OverheadThe overhead applied to jobs before profit is computed.
TaxCompany-level tax policy, working alongside the default tax rate in INVOICE DEFAULTS.

§Why overhead and commission basis matter most

These two cards reach the furthest. Overhead feeds the profit margin and net profit tiles on every customer’s FINANCIALS tab — set it wrong and every margin in the company reads wrong. The commission basis decides which line of the payout math commissions are computed on.

You can watch both at work in the commission queue: each entry’s breakdown runs contract → expenses → overhead → gross → net at approval time. If the overhead card is stale or job costs are missing, the breakdown inflates and approved commissions overpay.

§Approvals and alerts in daily work

Approval thresholds keep big numbers from moving alone — an estimate above the limit, a refund, or a change order waits for an admin before it takes effect. Alerts do the opposite job: they make sure shrinking margins and overdue balances surface on their own instead of waiting for month-end.

TIP
Review these cards with whoever approves commissions. The basis, the overhead, and the expense discipline in "Track expenses" together decide whether payouts are computed on real numbers.
